How do I renew my CSCS Card?

There are a few simple steps to take to renew your CSCS card. You will need to demonstrate you have the correct training and qualifications needed for your particular job role, and you need to pass the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test, which costs £21 when booked directly with the CITB.

The type of test you do and the qualifications you need to demonstrate will depend on which CSCS card you are applying for. This, in turn, will depend on your qualifications, job role, and any professional body membership you might have. If, therefore, you change job role, you will need to seek advice as you might need to change your CSCS card. Use the CSCS cardfinder to check which card and test are right for you.

You can order your card directly with the CSCS Contact Centre on 0344 994 4777.  Please ensure you have a credit or debit card to pay £36 for the CSCS card and any details of your current or previous employer’s.

Please note that CSCS cards can only be renewed 6 months prior to the expiry date and up to 6 months after the expiry date and that the expiry date of the new card will be as if the card was renewed on time.

All Industry Accreditation (IA) cards issued from 1st January 2020 will expire on 31st December 2024 and cannot be replaced using IA.

This is to meet Construction Leadership Council’s recommendations, which state that all construction industry card schemes must operate with nationally recognised qualifications in place for all occupations.

The tailored guidance below is designed to help cardholders replace their IA cards, depending on their occupation and qualifications, while a list of FAQs is also available.

Those requiring a qualification do not need to attend college and CITB grants are available to support CITB-registered employers achieve recognised qualifications.

Members of CSCS-approved professional bodies can apply for a Professionally Qualified Person card, while those with City and Guilds Craft or Advanced Craft certificates can apply for a full-term Blue or Gold Skilled Worker card, depending on which type they hold.

Changes to the CSCS Labourer and Trainee cards

❗️CSCS made changes to the Labourer card, which took effect from February 1st, 2025❗️

From February 2025, changes are being made to the CSCS Labourer and Trainee cards.

The initial Labourer card will reduce from five years to two years, with workers who continue in labouring roles then able to renew their card for five years by providing evidence they are employed in a labouring role.

The Trainee card will become available to those holding certain occupation related non-competence qualifications to help ensure new entrants start their careers on a training pathway that leads to a recognised qualification and a skilled CSCS card.

CSCS has a range of red cards to support those on recognised training pathways, such as apprenticeships and NVQs. For more information visit CSCS.uk.com/cards.

Additionally, the accompanying CITB Health, safety, and environment test used for the initial two-year card application will see its validity extended to three years, allowing it to be used for renewal and to avoid placing undue financial burdens on those who continue in labouring roles.
